Breastfeeding tip : Recognising a growth spurt

* You feel as though you haven't got enough
* Baby getting upset at the breast (though can be a sign of other common problems)
* Baby is breastfeeding often or almost nonstop (feel like baby is always wanting to feed)
* A baby who was previously sleeping through the night is now waking to breast feed several times
* Baby will latch and unlatch, fussing in between

default im wanting to stop

Post by angpixi on Thu Feb 17, 2011 10:46 am

Willow is still bf and can be very demanding, I was hoping she would gradually stop herself with a little encouragement like Aeryn did although Aeryn was younger. I think its now time to start the weaning process, I would like to have her stopped or at least down to a minimum feed by summer!
Am just looking for tips and support right now!

Well first of all well done you for getting as far as you have!! I love you

Are you all co sleeping? this will make it a little difficult if you are as I know when I am half asleep its just too easy just to give in Razz

What might be best to do is start cutting out the one that she is less likely to get upset about (so not the night feed) if you can start cutting out day time ones you can tell her that your boobies are not working until night Wink

This can be done gradually but only with one feed at a time.

Do youself a little plan, week by week in what you hope to do. Set out the first week with the feed thats less likely to be a problem, all the way to the feed that she seems to want the most (ie bedtime)

Distraction and telling a few fibs are most likely the only thing you can really do, her understanding will be quite good anyway and if she starts demanding just offer another form of comfort with a distraction... for example tell her that Mummy would really love a big cuddle and then quickly change the subject (during the hug) to something you know she enjoys doing like going in the garden or making something.

Anything you think she could be distracted with!

I do something like this at the moment with Olivia, she hasn't breastfed since she was around 13 months but will ask for it now and then, so I just say aww give me a big hug and then qucikly say "oooo lets go and make a card for someone" and she soon forgets!

I have a feeling I am going to be bfing Lottie for sometime yet, so may be trying out a few of these tricks myself when the time comes (hopefully not needed!!)

I have just stopped feeding Emily, i too kept thinking the feeds would get less & she would wean off herself but approaching her third birthday it was obvious i wasnt going to happen. I simple went to bed one night shattered and said can we not do mummy milk as mummy feels really poorly & she was happy, the next day i said i still felt unwell & again she said ok mummy, from then we started saying that now she was starting school (nursery) she was a very big girl & really didnt need mummy milk all the time. I thought it was going to be a big struggle but she has been fine. I stopped a few weeks back & she still comes in & tells me she loves my boobies but knows mummy milk has stopped as shes a big girl now ,gives me & them a hug & is quite happy about it all.
I think part of it was habit for us both & although i was really sad that i felt id forced her in the end & she hadnt self weaned im also really pleased we went so far & she has not felt she is missing out just that she is growing up...
Good luck xx

thanks both of you for replys!
well done for feeding emily so long and for having a stress free wean!
im not sure it will be so easy with willow, yes we are co-sleeping- dont have a choice as we havent any more bedrooms! i have tried a couple of the distraction processes i think i have to be a little more consistent, im terrible for sitting down then noticing shes is next to me latched on Embarassed

the plan is a great idea, i have written one down and intend to do it gradually!
will let you know how it goes x

well just to update, we were doing really well, id got her down to just a night feed and one during the night, i had even started to get up before she managed the morning one (before 6 Rolling Eyes ) but then she came down with a tummy bug followed by a cold and cough, lots of snot and sleepless nights. im afraid i just got back into it again.
SOOOO im starting again Laughing
at least i know it can be done with out too much trauma
I have a date in mind - im 40 in june so am aiming for a new start
ive even started to use face cream and wear makeup during the day thats a first!!
