Breastfeeding tip : Recognising a growth spurt

* You feel as though you haven't got enough
* Baby getting upset at the breast (though can be a sign of other common problems)
* Baby is breastfeeding often or almost nonstop (feel like baby is always wanting to feed)
* A baby who was previously sleeping through the night is now waking to breast feed several times
* Baby will latch and unlatch, fussing in between

default frantic feeding?....(need a little help please)

Post by xrachx on Sat Feb 27, 2010 10:00 pm

thats the only way i can describe it,does anyone elses baby do this? he thrashes his head about and grips and pulls my nipples,he grunts and fusses and kicks his legs lol,i have squeezed afterwards (when he comes off) and there is milk coming out so i dont think its a supply thing (well i hope not!) why is he doing it do you think?
he usually does it after the first let down and he seems to do it more late afternoon/evening feeds.

We have gone through periods of this, and I've never really worked out why! Also worse at late afternoon / evening feeds.

I considered slow let down, teething, overtiredness etc.... but I can't put my finger on it!

Just thought ..... Owen is worse at doing this during growth spurts ..... it's like he can't get enough milk fast enough and doesn't have the patience to wait for the next let down- could you be going through the 6 week spurt?

Also if he is really tired he feeds really fussily - especially at the start of a feed, then seems to settle into a sleepy rhythym later in the feed.

Anyhow, just wanted to let you know you are not alone!!

My girls do this when they have a bad flare up of thrush on their tongues - is there any white spots in Ethan's mouth?

Hope you can resolve the problem soon x

Yeah as said it could well be down to the famous 6 weeks growth spur (well done btw!) and also a possibility of thrush.

But to throw another at you it could also be wind, Lottie does the off on and thrashing when she has trapped wind.

My DS2 does this I was told it is because the milk isn't coming out quickly enough so the baby is making his feelings known Rolling Eyes Laughing

This is why it happens later in the day IYKWIM

There is nothing much you can do. But in time your supply will increase and hopefully the thrashing will stop. but i will coincide with growth spurts because of the sudden increase of appetite !

Try drinking plenty of fluids and remain calm and as unstressed as possible and this will also help with milk flow hug3
