Breastfeeding tip : Recognising a growth spurt

* You feel as though you haven't got enough
* Baby getting upset at the breast (though can be a sign of other common problems)
* Baby is breastfeeding often or almost nonstop (feel like baby is always wanting to feed)
* A baby who was previously sleeping through the night is now waking to breast feed several times
* Baby will latch and unlatch, fussing in between

New pain in breast

default New pain in breast

Post by TashaAndBump on Tue Feb 09, 2010 10:41 am

My boobs hurt It's not just the cracked nipples. All night I've had a niggly pain in the sides of my breasts. At first I thought the babies were scratching them while feeding, but it was still there when I laid down, so thought maybe my bra, but spent the rest of the night topless with no bra and it was still stinging. It feels like tiny baby nails scratching / tickling me just inside the boob on the outsides. Now it is a constant ache / sting, but it hurts most when feeding or when my milk fills up.

Any idea what it is or what I can do for it? :-(

OoO i don't want to say it but it could be the M word.

mastitis

This could almost certainly be down to incorrect latch and due to the cracked nipples, bacteria enters the breast making it inflamed.

Just to add if it is mastitis, you will start to feel flu type aches and you will feel unwell within a day or so after the initial pain.

It would be wise to contact your gp and get some anti biotics (on stand by) incase it gets too bad.

You will need to continue feeding and draining both breasts, and trying to find some local help with the latching.

Another reason that is possible is breast thrush due to the cracked nipples, again bacteria enters the breast.

This usualy shows in red patches, shiney red nips and you may want to look in the girls mouths to check.

You will almost certainly need to see medical advise if this is the case.

Upping your natural yogurt intake can be beneficial, especialy if you need anti biotics.

xx
