Breastfeeding tip : Recognising a growth spurt

* You feel as though you haven't got enough
* Baby getting upset at the breast (though can be a sign of other common problems)
* Baby is breastfeeding often or almost nonstop (feel like baby is always wanting to feed)
* A baby who was previously sleeping through the night is now waking to breast feed several times
* Baby will latch and unlatch, fussing in between

default 'Breastfeeding is a skill'

Does anyone hate this statement, or is it just me? I know it's usually intended as a compliment (and to make those who haven't succeeded feel better in my opinion), but it's so untrue, and makes it sound like lot of people can't do it. I know some people can't (all of 2%) but the majority can. How are we still here if it was a 'skill'. It's become harder for people to :boob: because it's not necessarily the 'norm' and we've forgotten how, and lack of support etc.

What does everyone else think?

I agree with you, reading the statement as it is "breastfeeding is a skill" does make it sound like only a certain amount of people would be able to do it. When infact all women can just sometimes there are other difficulties that can prevent it.

Some women however would see that statement as something that made them feel encouraged, thinking "wow I mastered breastfeeding, I gained a fantastic skill"

But yes as it is, its rather annoying!

I think i would prefer 'breastfeeding is natural but it doesnt always naturally happen, but with the right support its always achievable'

I like it!

It isnt always easy, and when i didnt manage feeding my first 2, i was happy to believe i couldnt 'master the skill' as i felt better. Having successfully breastfed for nearly 16 months now, I know that the important thing is knowledge and support - both available here lol!

No it is not a skill - it is about education, preseverance and time (both our own and that of professionals)

Love your thought Jane xx

Learning a skill doesn't rely heavily on support where bfing does.

Saying that though, I suppose breastfeeding sthe equivilent in terms of skill as learning to walk and talk. Only a small minority can't learn to do this, but the rest of the world picks it up.

If breastfeeding is a skill then its one of those ones that nature has built us to learn.

i agree that it isnt a skill, its something natural that some need help to over come obstacles and definatly need perserverence as i no from experience just how easy it would have been to give up after a few days were i was feeding bethany all night with a few 5 minute breaks lol :aww:
