Breastfeeding tip : Recognising a growth spurt

* You feel as though you haven't got enough
* Baby getting upset at the breast (though can be a sign of other common problems)
* Baby is breastfeeding often or almost nonstop (feel like baby is always wanting to feed)
* A baby who was previously sleeping through the night is now waking to breast feed several times
* Baby will latch and unlatch, fussing in between

Hi from us - we do hope to get to speak to you all at some point. Lliam and I are living currently just outside Edinburgh in Scotland. We have been breastfeeding exclusively for 4 months now. We are planning to continue until he wants to stop.

breastfeeding for first time - first time mom

We had a rocky start due to Lliam going straight to SCBU and living on glucose water for 5 days - they gave him a dummy without our permission and tried to give him formula but I managed to kick up such a fuss the paediatricians agreed to hold of until my milk could get a chance to come in - not easy when they wouldn't let me see my little one for nearly 24 hours and then only through plastic for days after!!! So much for kangaroo care etc. I learned to hand express pretty quickly after finding the majority of my colostrum got caught up in the mechanism and petal cushion area of the Avent manual expresser. We have tried a Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature pump which is better but I find hand expressing quickest and easiest for the infequent times I need to.

Lliam was 2 weeks overdue incidently but silly sausage had got distressed with cord round his neck and unable to progress down (stuck at -3) so passed meconium which he then inhaled and ingested, getting himself in a right mess and required delivery by emergency c-section with an apgar of 1 - so much for my VERY expensive hypnobirthing course!!!

He is doing great with minimal residual effects thank goodness and growing very fast - he has gone from 50 to 98th percentile for height and weight all on mummy's delicious and nutritious breastmilk!

Latch is still hopeless and he is constantly trying to suck on everything in sight but we persevered and I got through engorgement, bleeeding, cracked nipples, blisters, and a whole lot of tears, to end up with a wee boy whom I feed easily and happily in public and so well most people never realise we are doing more then having a cuddle. 6 weeks really was a magic time for us and the discovery of Lansinoh!!!
