Breastfeeding tip : Recognising a growth spurt

* You feel as though you haven't got enough
* Baby getting upset at the breast (though can be a sign of other common problems)
* Baby is breastfeeding often or almost nonstop (feel like baby is always wanting to feed)
* A baby who was previously sleeping through the night is now waking to breast feed several times
* Baby will latch and unlatch, fussing in between

default mixed feeding

Post by claireea on Fri Oct 17, 2008 7:50 pm

hi everyone, i have been :boob: for 4 months and my milk seems to have dried up a bit! I know that if you are feeding on demand which i am this is not supposed to happen but last week my daughter had a sickness bug pale. I thought she was still feeding but only put on 1 oz in ten days. Now she seems better but is not satisfied after feeds and wriggles and gets angry at some feeds as if she's not getting anything. I have really tried to continue to feed her myself as much as possible as i understand this is the only way to build my supply back up but she cries for more and i have been having to top her up with formula on a few occations. Has anyone else experienced this and do you all think i am doing the right thing, thanks in advance, Claire x

hiya

i'm guessing (if you've been bf-ing for that long) that your lil girl is about 4 months old??

if so, she's probably going through the dreaded 4 month growth spurt... connor never put on that much weight during his, but grew massively in length instead.

if i were you, i'd stop with the formula top-ups. your little girl will need to feed from you to keep your supply up, and i'm afraid the fussiness is just part and parcel of that phase and not necessarily an indication of a low milk supply. its difficult to put up with the fussiness - pigheadedness is generally the best way through it, LOL!

if you are worried about how much milk you have, make sure you eat and drink lots, eat oats, and try fenugreek/fennel tea/blackthorn juice; and rest as much as possible too. all of that will help Very Happy

good luck!! xx

it sounds to me very much like the 16 week growth spurt - which for me, was definately the worst!

If she has had a tummy bug, it is likely to be worse - but you are doing the right thing by feeding her on demand.
Can you pump in between?
And have you tried eating oats (porridge, flapjacks etc) to help boost your supply a little.

If you ride through it, this is the last big growth spurt, and it does get easier after this.

If all else fails, and you feel your supply is very low, i would reccomend trying Fenugreek, which is a natural supplement to help boost milk supply. (this should only be taken if needed tho, as you could end up with oversupply issues).

keep in there - chin up! :aww:

Tell us about yourself : People who have kids by more than 3 different men are SLAGS. They don't give a shit about the welfare of their children, otherwise they would be keeping their bloody legs shut and creating a STABLE environment for their kids, either in a stable relationship or as a single mother - because single mothers are perfectly capable of being fantastic parents. If you want to sleep around use some fucking contraception until you are sure your partner is in it for the long haul, it is not fucking difficult. Kids need stability - they don't need a succession of men coming in and out of their life.
