Breastfeeding tip : Recognising a growth spurt

* You feel as though you haven't got enough
* Baby getting upset at the breast (though can be a sign of other common problems)
* Baby is breastfeeding often or almost nonstop (feel like baby is always wanting to feed)
* A baby who was previously sleeping through the night is now waking to breast feed several times
* Baby will latch and unlatch, fussing in between

default Rant alert!!

Post by gem1981 on Sat Aug 30, 2008 11:44 am

Just spoken to my :preg: friend, she's due in December. Her friend had a baby last week in the same hospital as my friend (C) is having hers.

C just said when her friend was in hospital, a few hours after baby was born, she rang the buzzer for the midwife and said 'is she ok? she hasn't eaten yet and she's fast asleep' the midwife replied 'i'll go and get you a bottle'

GRRR! C also said she went to see her friend when they came home from hospital and she'd got some bottles, the midwives had told her it was 'so advanced, its just as good as breast milk'

These midwives should be struck off?! I've just told DH and said 'don't you think its disgusting?' he said 'yes, but how do you change it?'
What can you do to change things? I just think its so sad.

C has asked me to go through everything with her before baby comes so she knows what to do when the midwives are pushing bottles at her.

I told C to have skin to skin as soon as baby is born, and to try and get her latched on asap, but also, not to worry if baby doesn't take much in the first 24 hours as they don't need it straight away.

Am I right in saying this?

Olivia didn't start feeding until well after 5-6 hours after the birth, she was asleep most fo the time.

I can't believe the midwives told her that! it is disgusting and if you find out who they were you can complain here
http://www.nmc-uk.org/

It must be done in writing with the names of the people being complained about, they do take it seriously.

Thanks to them we have another mother who has had her right to breastfeed taking away from her due to poor advice, its so wrong.

Yes its ok if the baby hasnt fed straight away, though they wont let her leave hospital until the baby has shown it can latch and suckle.

Also it might be an idea if you can, to visit her if shes having problems in hospital, I know I could of done with someone who knew what they were doing.

Or ask her to find out who the breastfeeding/lactation consulants are in the hospital before giving birth (on name bases) so she can ask for them incase the midwives try and shove a bottle down her babies neck.

Mad I think they push formula as it means they dont have to spend time with the mums helping with :boob: its so awful for the mums to have this taken away from them. You should def get them reported.
I was very lucky and had Emily in Worthing hospital which was the opposite, they spent so much time with all the mums & i remember i saying she was too tired take baby away & give it a bottle & the bf team said no, told her to not be selfish look after baby in the best way she could. They had said that they had trained all the ladies that come in to help on the ward to help mums latch so that when midwifes & nurses were really busy there was always someone to help.
