Breastfeeding tip : Recognising a growth spurt

* You feel as though you haven't got enough
* Baby getting upset at the breast (though can be a sign of other common problems)
* Baby is breastfeeding often or almost nonstop (feel like baby is always wanting to feed)
* A baby who was previously sleeping through the night is now waking to breast feed several times
* Baby will latch and unlatch, fussing in between

default New born night feeds

Post by rhi'smummy on Mon Aug 11, 2008 12:22 pm

I've just had an email from a friend of mine with a baby who's now 5 weeks old. She's breast feeding and said he only has one feed at night now. That cant be right can it? She had been talking about giving him a bottle before bed so I asume she's done that, do any 5 week olds babies exclusively breast fed feed that little?
Last week she told me she knows when he's 'just comfort feeding', so if he cries when she knows he's not hungry she just leaves him.

I have heard of a few people giving babies the bottle before bed, so that they drink more oz's than they need and therefore sleep through more.

My lo is 3 weeks today and breast fed only and he feeds every 2-3 hrs through the day and the night.
Both my health visitor and midwife told me that it isnt possible to "spoil" or "over feed" a breast fed baby... that they will eat when they are hungry and spot when they are not.

When my baby crys I change his nappy if soiled and check his temp, if he's still crying I feed him. At night I know by the time if he is hungry lol.

Each baby will be different, but I don't know of any that young to sleep through :s x

Ellie dropped her 3-4am ish feed at 8weeks and was exclusively breastfed. I fed her before she went down at 7:30pm, I woke her up for a feed at 11:30pm, and then she would sleep through until about 7:30am. Does that help?

Wow Nicky, were'nt you the lucky one. That helps a lot, it is possible then, maybe its just the ones who feed lots that get mentioned more often.
Thanks

She used to feed loads during the day, I tried to get her to feed every 3 hrs but rarely managed it and in the early evening she fed every hour into the run up to bed. They call it cluster feeding, it was very much like she was storing up so she could have a nice long sleep.

Rhianna was a master at cluster feeding, but still fed lots over night. I live in hope if we have another, he/she will be a sleeper, not another all nighter.
