Breastfeeding tip : Recognising a growth spurt

* You feel as though you haven't got enough
* Baby getting upset at the breast (though can be a sign of other common problems)
* Baby is breastfeeding often or almost nonstop (feel like baby is always wanting to feed)
* A baby who was previously sleeping through the night is now waking to breast feed several times
* Baby will latch and unlatch, fussing in between

topic2 Should I be waking Lo up during the night

Post by salocius on Fri Aug 08, 2008 8:24 pm

Hi All,

My lo is 9 weeks old and for the last 2 weeks has been going from 10pm til 4 sometimes 5.30am. ( :aww: i get some sleep yippee)

When i took her to get weighed last week the hv asked how her feeding was and I said its now going really well and that she is sleeping throu most of the night. She quickly replied and said that I shouldn't let her go more than 4 hours. Evil or Very Mad When lo had her 8 week check i mentioned to the GP that she was going throu and she said it was ok providing that she still thrives and gets plenty of feeds during the day

I feed her every 2 hours during the day sometimes hourly if its hot so she is getting plenty during the day.

I was always on the understanding that you shouldn't wake a sleeping baby during the night! I mean we don't like getting woken up during the night so surely they don't either.

So far i have ignored her but as you guys know more than what she does about :boob: I thought id ask.

Thanks in advance

Karen & Tasmin x

I wouldn't wake her up. Enjoy sleep and save up energy for growth spurts: she might end up waking up again. :aww:

I am most envious and agree with all the other ladies. Enjoy the sleep whilst you can. Your lo will soon wake if she is hungry.

i've had to wake her at 5.30 for the last few nights as i was goin to explode and began to get uncomfortable.

Think lo and her big sister has been planning on ensuring i don't get a good nights sleep as i was up all night with the eldest ( 9yrs) last night

Probably a bit late but I agree with others don't wake her now. I read somewhere that the first 2 weeks you should wake them every 4hrs but once they are over 2 weeks old you don't need to.

I have never woken my youngest she has always slept from 11pm till 6am. She now sleeps from 10.30 till 4am and then sleeps till 6am then till 8am. I think its a growth spurt making her wake earlier. I was also told to wake her in the night when we had weight problems, but i needed my sleep and never did. She is fine now and gaining nicely. (well i hope, weigh day tomorrow)

I got my Lo weighed yesterday and she now weighs 11lb 4oz which means that she's only put on 5oz since her last weigh in at 8 weeks.

The HV wants me to go back next week to get her weighed again, she even said that she looks healthy etc so why make us so concerned about her weight. They complain if they put on weight too quickly or if they don't.
