Breastfeeding tip : Recognising a growth spurt

* You feel as though you haven't got enough
* Baby getting upset at the breast (though can be a sign of other common problems)
* Baby is breastfeeding often or almost nonstop (feel like baby is always wanting to feed)
* A baby who was previously sleeping through the night is now waking to breast feed several times
* Baby will latch and unlatch, fussing in between

default baby falling to sleep

Post by claireea on Mon Jul 07, 2008 3:15 pm

hi every one! can any one please give me some advice. I have been bf my baby girl for nearly 4 weeks now, she feeds well and is gaining weight but sometimes falles to sleep while sucking. I have tried all the usual things, blowing on her, tickling her feet and stroking her face and she wakes up for a few seconds and falls back to sleep so i leave her then she wakes after about ten minutes wanting more. Anyone have any suggestions for me please, all advice will be gratefully received, thanks x

Hi and Welcome to the board! :aww: Congratulations on giving birth to your little girl, hun! :aww:

It is normal for baby to fall asleep on breast and it is normal for her to wake up while later and be hungry. Feeding- esp sucking is a hard work and feeling mummy and smelling her feels so good babies juts feel so safe and good they doze off.
You could try to burb her and/ or change her nappy when she fall's asleep.
Is she coming of the breast and letting nipple go? If she is still attached and sucking from time to time you could try breast compressions:
http://www.breastfeedingonline.com/15pdf.pdf. This will stimulate breats and help milk flow faster, even if she is not sucking much. Few videos by DrJack Newman:
http://asklenore.info/breastfeeding/additional_reading/movies/compression.wmv
http://asklenore.info/breastfeeding/additional_reading/movies/compression2.wmv

Also to make your life easyer, I'm sure many mums will agreee, you could carry her in a sling or pouch and do your "stuff" around the home and when she wants she can feed without disturbing you. Few tips on possitioning and how to feed baby in a sling here:
http://site.peppermint.com/instructions/kangaroocare_ringsling.pdf

Also in the evenings, when baby is cluster feeding, you could get yourself drink ready, some snacks, a book, remote control for tv, put your feet up and feed baby- I miss this time most- I always had an excuse not to do things when Maya was little, she fed sometimes 4 hours straight.

Hi Claire, welcome to the forum and congratulations on breastfeeding for 4 weeks! :aww:

I cant add anymore to what Katie has said really, just to re-iterate the sitting down and relaxing bit. I have 2 young children as well as my baby - and i could let myself get worked up about it. But i sit here nursing and think 'I cant ever get this time back again' - and it makes me cherish it!

Mollie falls asleep feeding regularly. Especially at night.

Only problem is she tends to wake up with wind, i have even winded her when she's been asleep sometimes to try and stop her waking up with belly ache.
