Breastfeeding tip : Recognising a growth spurt

* You feel as though you haven't got enough
* Baby getting upset at the breast (though can be a sign of other common problems)
* Baby is breastfeeding often or almost nonstop (feel like baby is always wanting to feed)
* A baby who was previously sleeping through the night is now waking to breast feed several times
* Baby will latch and unlatch, fussing in between

default help!!

Post by ambee820 on Tue Mar 25, 2008 12:31 am

my son is 12 weeks old. since he was born, i tried to get him on the breast but the nurses at the hospital were not helpful at all. i started to pump and i have been giving him breast milk via a bottle. i stopped trying to get him to latch on at about 8 weeks. my question is, is it too late to get him to latch on? should i use a nipple sheild or something? i want to get him latched on but i don't know if it's too late or not.

Hi 👋

Welcome!

Congratulations on the birth of your son cheers

I am sorry you had no support when he was born Crying or Very sad

The good news is it is not too late to get him to breastfeed but it will take alot of persistance and determination.

Ideally you need to see a breastfeeding counsellor. Do you know of any in your area? If not ring the helpline for the ABM the telephone number is
08444 122 949.

You need to slowly get him interested in the breast again and at the same time build up your milk supply.

Lots of skin to skin contact will help. If you have a sling carry him in it as much as you can so he is close to you and offer him the breast whenever he shows interest. But don't expect him to nurse to start with.

At the same time begin to pump your breasts regularly every few hours and at least once at night. Don't worry if you can't get anything to begin with you are trying to reestablish your milk and it will take time. Anything you do get can be given to your baby.

If your health visitor is supportive then speak to her or like I say ring a counsellor as you will need help to do this.

:aww:

Im not in a position to advise you, but just wanted to welcome you and say hi!

Is your little one getting all expressed milk or are you supplementing with formula?

Hiya!

Definatly not too late, if anything you have got a very good chance considering you are still pumping, what a fab mommy you are! :aww:

I agree with everything Nichola has said, I really think the skin to skin woud be ideal and let him route to the breast and take it from there.

Squeeze out some breastmilk aswell while doing that.

Thanks all. He is getting only expressed milk. No formula or anything. I will try to contact a consultant to see what I can do. I pump about 10 oz every 3 hrs which is way more than he eats so I am donating a lot of it.

well I got him latched on for about 30 seconds today which is more than ever so I was happy. It is really hard but I had the idea in my head that no matter what, he was getting the breast milk one way or another.

what I did was pump so milk was already coming out and then put him on. do i do this at every feeding? also, do i do it when he's really hungry or when he's just starting? because i can tell he's hungry before he starts screaming.

Hi

I would keep on expressing to get the milk flowing before you latch him on as that way he will associate the breast with milk and it will encourage him to nurse.

maybe try him when he first shows signs of hunger then he will be more patient than when he is starving and you can take your time getting him latched on.

You are doing great cheers
