Breastfeeding tip : Recognising a growth spurt

* You feel as though you haven't got enough
* Baby getting upset at the breast (though can be a sign of other common problems)
* Baby is breastfeeding often or almost nonstop (feel like baby is always wanting to feed)
* A baby who was previously sleeping through the night is now waking to breast feed several times
* Baby will latch and unlatch, fussing in between

Hi
My Sam was ill last week (he had a cold and it was making him throw up) and 2 doctors told me to give him water. Sam is the fourth i have breast fed and i've never been told to give any of them water before.

Is this the general advice these days or did i just get misguided doctors.
i didnt give him water i just kept feeding him as normal.

love

Viki and Sam

You were doing the right thing, breastmilk will hydrate and provide the antibodies to fight the cold.

Misguided doctor as you said

I'd just keep feeding him as normal, especially if your baby is tiny. If maybe he was about 9-12months and vomiting a lot with obvious issues with a stomach virus I'd be tempted, but not at under 6 months and not if its just cold related.

There is no need. He will do much better with warm breast milk which has the added bonus of helping with nutrients and antibodies that water just doesn't have.

Tbh its probably just misguided doctors. When lil miss was in SCBU with Jaundice they gave her water to flush out her system. I've since been told this is really dangerous yet this was practiced by consultants, doctors and neonatal personel. So yer, it could quite possibly be misguidence.
